Our approach to Invisalign
Invisalign provides the aligners, but careful planning and clinical judgement determine how those aligners are used.
Our Invisalign dentists have undertaken extensive additional training and put considerable time into planning each case. We do not simply accept a computer-generated treatment plan. We review and refine the proposed movements ourselves, with the aim of creating a predictable treatment plan and a beautifully finished result.
We refine the digital plan
Your dentist carefully reviews the proposed position of each tooth and makes detailed manual adjustments within the Invisalign planning software rather than simply relying on the initial computer-generated plan.
We plan movements that can work
A plan needs to do more than look good on a screen. We consider the order, direction and amount of tooth movement so that the movements we ask the aligners to produce are as realistic and predictable as possible.

Digital scan and detailed treatment planning
If you decide to proceed, we digitally scan your teeth and create detailed 3D models showing exactly where we are aiming to move them. Your dentist carefully reviews and manually refines the proposed tooth movements before your final treatment plan is approved.
Your aligners
You will receive a sequence of clear, removable aligners. Each aligner gradually guides your teeth towards their planned position. You should aim to wear your aligners for around 22 hours each day.
Reviews and refinements
We review your progress throughout treatment and make refinements where appropriate to help your teeth reach their carefully planned positions.
Your finished smile
Once your teeth have reached their planned position, you will be provided with retainers to protect your result and help keep your teeth in their new position.

Invisalign questions
Some of the questions patients commonly ask before starting treatment.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Invisalign treatment can take between approximately 3 and 18 months, although most treatments take around 6–9 months. Your individual treatment time depends on the starting position of your teeth and the complexity of the movements required.
How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?
You should aim to wear your Invisalign aligners for around 22 hours a day. More wear is better, but 22 hours is a useful guideline and allows approximately two hours each day for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning your teeth.
Can I eat normally with Invisalign?
Yes. Because the aligners are removable, you take them out when eating. This means there are fewer dietary restrictions than with fixed braces.
Is Invisalign painful?
You may notice pressure or mild tenderness when you start a new aligner as your teeth begin to move. This is usually temporary.
Will people notice I am wearing Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are transparent and fit closely over the teeth, making them considerably less noticeable than traditional fixed braces.
Am I too old for Invisalign?
There is no typical upper age for adult orthodontic treatment. Suitability depends more on your dental health, tooth position and the type of movement required.
Will I need retainers afterwards?
Yes. Once your Invisalign treatment is complete, retainers are provided to help protect your result and maintain the position of your teeth. We will discuss your retention plan with you before treatment is completed.
Can I see what my teeth will look like before I start?
Yes. During the detailed planning stage we create 3D models showing how we intend to move your teeth and their planned final positions. This allows us to carefully visualise and refine the proposed result before your Invisalign treatment begins.
