What is a root canal?

Root canal treatment (Endodontics) is a procedure which can help you if your dentist has found that you have a dead or dying nerve inside a tooth. Root canal treatment will help to prevent pain and spreading infection.

What does treatment involve?

After being made numb so that you do not feel any discomfort, your dentist will remove the affected nerve tissue and will disinfect the inside of the tooth before placing specialised filling material into this space inside the tooth root canals.

Some patients worry about having this treatment however, you need not worry, modern root canal treatments have a very good success rate and we will make sure the anaesthetic has made your tooth completely numb before treatment.

Working with our team to have regular check-ups and great dental hygiene will limit the likelihood of your having to have a root canal.

Complex root canal treatments of difficult teeth are usually carried out by specialists. With a specialist endodontist on our team, there will be no need to refer you to another practice for a root canal. Your dentist will be able to guide you on the specific circumstances of your tooth.

Dr Erlind Pepla studied dental surgery at Sapienza University in Rome (Italy), one of Europe’s most prestigious universities and ranked first in Italy.

Graduating in 2010, Erlind then spent his first 5 years working in Endodontic and Restorative Dentistry completing a Master of Science Degree in 2011 (Sapienza University of Rome) and a PhD in Restorative Dentistry in 2015 at the same university.

Erlind moved to the UK in 2015 to take up a position as Endodontist in several practices in Suffolk. In 2017, he accepted a position as a part-time Clinical Lecturer of Restorative Dentistry at Bristol University, teaching basic (3rd year students) and advanced (4th year students) Endodontics.

In 2020 Erlind became the Endodontic Lead at Bristol University, being in charge of all the Endodontic teaching and assessment. 

In his spare time Erlind enjoys spending time with his daughter and family.
