Hygiene

Looking after your teeth at home is essential—but even with good brushing, there are areas that are difficult to clean fully.

Over time, plaque can build up and harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush alone.

Regular hygiene visits play a key role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy—helping to prevent problems before they start and supporting your long-term oral health.

Your Hygiene visit explained

In this video, our hygienist Bianca explains what happens during your appointment and how professional cleaning helps keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What can I expect from my visit to the hygienist?

An appointment with one of our hygienists will involve:

  • A scale of your teeth to remove the build-up of hardened plaque or tartar. This cannot be removed with home toothbrushing
  • A clean of the build ups of soft plaque from areas around and in-between your teeth that you cannot see and cannot access
  • A polish to remove surface stains
  • Personalised recommendations on cleaning techniques and feedback on where and how to clean better.

How often should I see the hygienist?

How often you should attend will vary depending on your individual needs and your risk of dental disease.

For many patients, regular visits every 6 months help maintain healthy gums and prevent problems developing.

If you have gum disease—or have had it in the past—we may recommend more frequent or longer appointments. In some cases, this may involve a deeper clean, where the gums are gently numbed to allow for a more thorough treatment.
